    Approximately 75% to 95% of patients with medullary thyroid cancer present as a thyroid nodule in the upper portion of the gland where C cells are primarily located. About 70% will have cervical lymphadenopathy, and a few patients have compression symptoms like dysphagia, hoarseness, or respiratory difficulty.
    Medullary thyroid cancer. Well-differentiated tumors ( papillary thyroid cancer and follicular thyroid cancer) can be treated and can usually be cured. Poorly differentiated and undifferentiated tumors ( anaplastic thyroid cancer) are less common. These tumors grow and spread quickly and have a poorer chance of recovery.
    There is no follicle development as the tumor is developed from the parafollicular C cell of the thyroid. Approximately 75% to 95% of patients with medullary thyroid cancer present as a thyroid nodule in the upper portion of the gland where C cells are primarily located.
    MTC was first characterized in 1959. Approximately 25% of medullary thyroid cancer cases are genetic in nature, caused by a mutation in the RET proto-oncogene. When MTC occurs by itself it is termed sporadic medullary thyroid cancer. Medullary thyroid cancer is seen in people with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A and 2B.
