Small-cell carcinoma is an undifferentiated neoplasm composed of primitive-appearing cells. As the name implies, the cells in small-cell carcinomas are smaller than normal cells, and barely have room for any cytoplasm. Some researchers identify this as a failure in the mechanism that controls the size of the cells.

Squamous cells are flat cells located near the surface of the skin and are one of the main types of cells in the top layer of the skin known as the epidermis. When there is excessive exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation, there is DNA damage leading to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It is the second most common skin cancer. SCC is characterized by abnormal, increased growth of squamous cells. SCC of the skin is called cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). However, it can be seen in other parts of the body like the mouth, throat and lungs. The lesions of SCC appear on the sun-exposed areas of the body. They appear as a rough, scaly, red patch, open sore, raised growth with a central depression. Early detection of SCC can be completely cured by minor surgery or with a medicine applied. Treatment depends on the size of the lesion, and the area affected by the aggressiveness of the disease. The surgical procedures include Curettage and electrodesiccation (C and E), Laser therapy, Freezing, and Photodynamic therapy. The larger lesions require radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted drug therapy. Mohs surgery is performed in case of a large lesion. In this surgery, the doctor removes the cancer layer by layer and examines each layer for abnormal cells. This examination is performed until no abnormal cells are seen.
