Lung cancer is an abnormal growth of the normal cells in the lungs. The causes for this are smoking, inhaling chemical irritants, and genetic causes. The symptoms include breathlessness, mass in the lungs, and blood in the sputum. Cancer can spread to other parts of the body by distant spread through blood. It can be diagnosed by chest X-rays, MRI or CT scan, lung tissue biopsy, and sputum cytology. Multiple lung nodules can be caused due to lung cancer or metastasis from different organs. But it need not always be cancerous. Other causes of multiple lung nodules are infections like tuberculosis, parasitic and fungal infections, pneumocystis, or cryptococcus infection. It can also be caused due to inflammation like granulomatosis and sarcoidosis.

While most benign tumors are harmless, a major concern with benign tumors is differentiating these from malignant (cancerous) tumors. The survival rate for lung cancer is highest when caught and treated in the early stages. The terminology surrounding lung tumors can be confusing, and it's helpful to first define a few terms:
Determination of whether a lung nodule is benign or malignant based solely on its anatomical location is an incorrect practice. Anatomical location has no predictability on the malignant potential of a tumor. Benign lung tumors can occur in the periphery of the lung, but they can also occur as endobronchial lesions within the tracheobronchial tree.
  3. A benign lung tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue that serves no purpose and is found not to be cancerous. Benign lung tumors may grow from many different structures in the lung. Determining whether a nodule is a benign tumor or an early stage of cancer is very important.
