    The Mini-Mental Status Exam (MMSE) is a cognitive screening tool that provides a brief, objective measure of cognitive function. It can be used to screen for cognitive impairment, to estimate the severity of the impairment, and to document cognitive change over time.
    The Mini-Mental State Exam assesses cognitive function by having the tester show the subject a pencil or watch. It is not used on its own to diagnose dementia. A score below 24 is considered indicative of dementia, but it’s not enough alone to diagnose someone who scored 23 or less with dementia.
