  1. When a tumor is diagnosed as benign, doctors will usually leave it alone rather than remove it. Even though these tumors are not generally aggressive toward surrounding tissue, occasionally they may continue to grow, pressing on other tissue and causing pain or other problems.

Fibroadenomas are common noncancerous (benign) breast lumps. They're a type of benign breast disease that rarely increases breast cancer risk. Fibroadenomas may get bigger or smaller over time. Some disappear completely.

    Benign tumors:

    • typically grow slowly
    • have smooth, distinct borders
    • do not grow into surrounding tissue or organs
    • do not invade other parts of the body

Unlike a cancerous tumor, which can potentially invade nearby tissues and spread to distant organs, a benign mass is not life-threatening, cannot metastasize and may not require treatment. After diagnosing a benign breast lump, a physician may simply suggest a "wait-and-watch" approach to monitor the mass for changes.

A lump in the breast is always a matter of concern, though the majority of breast lumps are due to noncancerous causes. Any change in the size or shape of the breast or any new lump in the breast will need immediate medical attention. Cancerous breast lumps are usually stone hard in consistency, have multiple irregular edges, are painless, and are immobile. They often cause skin and nipple changes like cracks, pigmentation, puckering, and blood-stained discharge from the nipples. And there is also painful axillary lymph node swelling seen in most of the cancerous causes. In non-cancerous or benign causes, the breast lumps will be usually painful, discrete, smooth-edged, mobile, and soft to medium hard in consistency. Benign lumps are mostly hormone-dependent and may vary with the changes in the menstrual cycle. However, thorough clinical examination, mammogram and biopsy are required for the confirmation and diagnosis.
