An eyelid is a thin fold of skin that covers and protects the eye. The levator palpebrae superioris muscle helps in the movement of eyelid. The human eyelid features a row of eyelashes along the eyelid margin, which helps in protection of the eye from dust and foreign debris. The main function of eyelid is to keep the cornea moist and clean.
The eyelid margin is another unique aspect of the eyelids, which is important to understand for surgical landmarks and various pathologies. This will be discussed in a separate section. Another method of thinking about eyelids (especially in surgery) is dividing the eyelid into anterior and posterior lamellae.
Most benign lesions originate from the epidermis, dermis, or adnexal structures of the skin (meibomian glands or glands of Moll and Zeiss). In several studies, about 80 to 85% of eyelid lesions that required biopsy were benign.
