Research is ongoing. But we do know that taking melatonin for short periods of time — meaning days or weeks — is better than a placebo for sleep onset insomnia, or difficulty initially falling asleep. Melatonin supplements may improve your sleep if you have disrupted circadian rhythms (from jet lag or working the night shift, for example).
Research has found that taking melatonin in low doses is the most effective way to promote sleep if you are experiencing restlessness or insomnia. Recommended doses of melatonin are from 0.5 mg up to 3 mg, which are adequate to promote sleep or treat jet lag. When melatonin is used at higher doses, it tends to increase daytime sleepiness.
There is no official recommended melatonin dosage for adults, but a range of 0.5 milligram to 5 milligrams appears to be safe and effective. Adults can take melatonin about one hour before bed. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using melatonin without first consulting their doctor.
