A lump in the breast is always a matter of concern, though the majority of breast lumps are due to noncancerous causes. Any change in the size or shape of the breast or any new lump in the breast will need immediate medical attention. Cancerous breast lumps are usually stone hard in consistency, have multiple irregular edges, are painless, and are immobile. They often cause skin and nipple changes like cracks, pigmentation, puckering, and blood-stained discharge from the nipples. And there is also painful axillary lymph node swelling seen in most of the cancerous causes. In non-cancerous or benign causes, the breast lumps will be usually painful, discrete, smooth-edged, mobile, and soft to medium hard in consistency. Benign lumps are mostly hormone-dependent and may vary with the changes in the menstrual cycle. However, thorough clinical examination, mammogram and biopsy are required for the confirmation and diagnosis.
